Shift Happens
One of my New Year's resolutions is about my personal fitness,
so I'm determined to spend more time in the gym this year (and
less time around chocolate cake)!
Last week, I was on the treadmill, listening to my favourite
Internet radio station Web Talk Radio,
which has a weekly show about the latest trends in Internet technology.
The reason I was able to listen to this while on the treadmill
is not because the gym music was tuned in to an Internet
radio station (I'm sure that's not what they mean by "techno rap" :-)).
It's because Web Talk Radio also makes their show available for
download, so I can listen to it at my convenience on my MP3 player.
This is a principle called "time shifting", where you can experience
a live event without having to be there at the time the event occurs.
The most common example is your video recorder.
This is a simple concept, but very powerful for you as an information
expert. Are you using it to create new products and added value
from what you already do?
For example:
- A workshop or training day is a live event, but you could
time-shift it by recording it and creating a home study course.
- Your keynote is a live event, but you could time-shift it into
an audio CD, video or DVD product.
- A teleseminar is a live event, which is easy to time-shift by providing
an audio recording and/or written transcript.
- If you do personal coaching or consulting, either in person or
over the phone, you can time-shift this in the same way to
produce an audio file and written transcript, so the client
has a permanent record for future reference.
All of these take very little effort, but can create huge added
value and new product opportunities (not to mention the possibility
of new income streams).
I talk about time-shifting in my "Spinning Straw Into Gold"
presentation, which is about the nine dimensions (time-shifting is one) for creating massive
value from your existing products and services.
