Pop-Up Windows

Pop-up windows are among the most controversial Web site features around. Some people hate pop-up windows; others love them. The reality is that pop-up windows can be annoying, but they do work if they are done properly - they can be one of the most powerful ways to engage visitors, build relationships and get more sales.

Why use pop-up windows?

  • A pop-up window on entry grabs the visitor's attention and directs them to a specific message, which can increase your conversion rate.
  • Research shows that pop-up windows that ask people to sign up for free newsletters or reports dramatically increase sign-up rates. This allows you to build an on-going relationship with that Web site visitor.
  • A pop-up window when somebody leaves your site allows you to ask their opinion, which means that you can constantly improve your site to match the market's requirements.
  • Specifically, use a pop-up window when somebody doesn't buy your product, to ask them why they didn't buy. This is invaluable market research for future customers.
  • You can even "down-sell" on exit: If somebody doesn't buy, offer them a different product at a lower price. If price was the reason that they didn't buy, you might still get a sale at the lower price.

Examples

www.suemaree.com

On some of her program pages, Sue-maree uses an exit pop-up (that is, when the user leaves the page) to survey her readers about that topic.

www.gihanperera.com

On a promotional page for a product, Gihan uses an exit pop-up to invite site visitors to sign up for a free introductory course if they're not buying the product.

What our system does ...

Our Fast Forward Web package allows you to create pop-up windows. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Create as many as you like, and attach them to any pages of your choice. So you can customise the windows for individual pages.
  • Create entry pop-ups that draw attention to specific things.
  • You can delay the display of the pop-up window (for example, wait 20 seconds before showing it), allowing the user to get the gist of the main page before the pop-up appears.
  • Create an exit pop-up to display a message when they leave a page. As mentioned above, this can be used for surveying the user, making another offer, or asking them to sign up to your mailing list.
  • All pop-ups can be configured so that they appear only once every X number of days for each user, so that repeat visitors don't get pestered by them.
